Weekly Feed #152

Feed weekly april 29, 2022

Weekly bag of surprises, a good mix of links to things we found useful and/or interesting and sometimes just fun and/or weird.

Reading list

  • Farewell breakpoints in responsive web design. May sound like utopia, which is likely why the proposed approach to this enigmatic fluidity is named Utopia.
  • So Airbnb employees can work and live from anywhere. Why that's news beats us, while live and work from anywhere is kinda their core product. Anyways, here's what you need to know.

Design of the week

  • This years Visuelt nominees are out, and it's a strong lineup this year. (We're happy to have a couple jobs in the pool).
  • Look out for Source Type. Not only a gorgeous site, but a type foundry with some wits too.
  • Making the most of it, another type foundry in the shape of GT Planar is also on our radar these days. Just look at the site, it's crazy cool.
  • Material Symbols is a variable icon font from Google that's been out for a while, with over 2,000 icons in five styles. Pretty comprehensive in other words, and here's a comprehensive look into it.
  • Minutes, not hours, is the keyword to this weeks addition to our growing list of Figma plugins that'll completely revolutionise our jobs. Each promises to shave off around 90% of time spent on tasks. So we should have idle lives then. Alas, we'll rewrite Greg LeMonds famous quote: It never gets faster, you just do more.

Tech of the week

There's much too little focus on technologies being passed on to the after life. Here's a fresh update letting us know that Lerna is officially a dead project, offering a rare glimpse of the level of sympathy such an event garners.

An important security announcement, talking about how OAuth user tokens issued to Heroku and Travis-CI are out and about.

So if the code is paid for with public taxpayers' money, why isn't the code open source? A point is being made that public money should equal public code.

Also here to save the day, and make us work even more efficiently (ie. output more). Linear wants to be "The new standard for modern software development". If you follow our weekly round up, the only thing that seems certain is that this standard will be replaced by another in about a weeks time.

Zag is a collection of framework-agnostic UI component patterns like accordion, menu, and dialog that can be used to build design systems for React, Vue and Solid.js
