Feed Weekly #256

Feed weekly August 30, 2024

A byte's worth of weeklies!

Reading list

  • One Million Checkboxes was really fun while it lasted, and the creator tells the story on how it became a lot more than he could have imagined. It's one of those moments of amazement on how the Internet just keeps giving. Not gonna spoil it, you should read the thread.
  • Angry old man yells at clouds. Alex Russel, who can whip up a browser for breakfast, like literally making it, is always very very angry at Javascript, and he's ranting here. Interesting and valuable though.

Design of the week

  • Somebody posted this, to let you know that SUB does a lot of great projects, that'll inspire you to do better. The website itself though. Make up you own mind, do you like it or not. Not saying it's bad, but also not saying it's good.
  • Listen, did you know that Issey Miyake designed the Lithuanian olympic uniform in 1992, on the heels of Lithuania becoming independent from the Soviet Union? Well, now you do.

Tech of the week

  • Oh, Sonos. Long story short, they released a completely redesigned app and everyone hated it so much that there was serious debates about just rolling back to the old app. The CEO admitted the mistake, offered a public letter of apology, promising that the top priority was to make the app better. The unusual part is how public this whole thing is, contrasting how public relations in big tech usually works. The latest attempt at rebuilding trust is this public Trello board listing the fixes that are under way.
  • Automattic is migrating half a billion Tumblr blogs onto WP, for unknown reasons other than obvious incentives in owning both platforms. It is likely one of the largest technical migrations in internet history. Here's the statement.
  • Laravel Cloud promises to be the future of shipping, so make sure you sign up for the waitlist to enter the future a little sooner than everyone else. Which semantically makes the whole thing less futuristic. And we love semantics in the tech section of this little blog of ours. And we don't backspace, apologies for that. Anyways, our devs are excited about it.
  • Hope you're awake for this one. Vercel is introducing Marketplace. Yes, exciting stuff. It supports several storage solutions at the same price as buying direct, so grab a CFO and go happy dancing.
  • Next.js Conf always has a fun website, and the yearly edition is out now. Nice!

Get back to work. It's Friday, and the last day of the month even. Commit, and submit those hrs. Then beer. But first, work.
