Feed Weekly #262

Feed weekly October 18, 2024

There is so much to do on the Internet, it has lots of information. That's why we've done the job for you, and compiled a list of the only things you'll need to bother with. Consider yourself green lighted to pass through the intersection of tech and design with us.

Reading list

  • While music may have peaked in 1994, the future truly arrived in 2004. Facebook, Gmail, Firefox, Flickr all launched that year, and it was a crazy year for gadgets. The Verge takes a well worth trip down memory lane.

Design of the week

  • A bespoke mural in a McDonald's is making the internet freeze. You'll have to watch a 19-minute talk by the creator of Playdate to understand and appreciate it properly.
  • The Product lead at Stripe, explains how to pick problems truly worth solving, in Linear's Conversations on Quality.
  • A wonderful TLDR about Nebiolo, an Italian foundry and the makers of Forma, and their quest to give Helvetica and Univers proper competition. It all takes place in the 60's, and we're getting ideas for uniforms around or office.
  • What is this, and why, we thought this Weekly was all one needed to source gen AI tools for creative professionals. Alas, Creative AI Lab has us thoroughly beat.
  • Can't leave you without some fresh typeface news though. Check out UN-11 over at Sourcetype, and read up on what makes this iteration based on Univers special! That golf ball...........

Tech of the week

  • Don't skip a Cloudflare blog post. A mantra personified by a few of the devs here at Feed. Here's the story of web framework Hono, straight from the creator of Hono.
  • Tradition also dictates an update on what's going on in the Wordpress vs WP Engine beef. The latest is this quite passive aggressive approach to weed out the doubters from the ranks of Wordpress org. Employees have a new deadline to take the "alignment offer" which basically lets you quit and take $90k with you on your way out, no questions asked, if you don't agree in the WP Engine beef. Would you take the money?
  • Ever pondered iOS password syntax? Check out this little tidbit explaining the design behind the gibberish.
  • Private Equity now controls Squarespace, after completing the acquisition at $7.2B, which is $7.19B more than the scope of volumetric monetary understanding this copywriter can deal with. Is it a lot? A little? Who knows.

Shoot for the stars and reach the treetop. Shoot for the treetop and headbut the trunk.
